We were spinning in a sort of Midwestern Galaxy with hot dog buns for stars and cotton candy for planets. There were flys swarming around our ears and gravel in our sandals so, we held on tight to keep from flying away. We were spinning and spinning and our mouths were open and maybe we were laughing or screaming or telling secrets but the music was so loud I guess we'll never really know. And then! With one jerky movement, the spinning had stopped. I Knew we were in our bodies because I could feel your thigh against mine, your hand on my arm and your smelt salty like sweat and popcorn. The bar went up but at that point I didn't know where you ended and the sky began. I didn't know how hard it might be to love you, how many ways you knew how to hurt me.
All that mattered then was your hand on my shoulder,
tickets warm and sweaty in my fist,
the bus ride home I fell asleep with my head on your lap
the cricket in your room,
bare bodies on a bare mattress.
