150 years ago no one learned character from self-help books. The men learned from working in the fields, absorbing the micro-movements of other men of character. Now I'm stuck in therapy, wondering whether I'm ever going to feel right. Blah.

Pay no attention. Therapy/counseling can work wonders. It is true that things are so very different from 150 years ago. There has been a steady erosion of morals and standards in just the last 30 years or so. Your therapist can, or should, help you to find that voice inside you that will tell you what is right for you.
